Busting Diet Myths | The Weight Loss Warrior
Ahh..weight loss! We’ve heard it all, seen it all and even attempted to do it all.
You add all the little ‘rules’ you hear regarding shedding kilos to your to-do lists and follow the craziest fads if they guarantee a thinner you. (Sob)
Sounds all too familiar!
However – where are all these rules coming from? Who first said a “A detox diet is the ultimate diet plan?” and more importantly, WHY are we trusting the word of an invisible rule maker?
Here are some of the most popular weight loss myths – debunked!
1. IF YOU EAT LESS FOOD, YOU LOSE MORE WEIGHT
This one’s got to be the crowd favourite! So what’s the deal is it true?
WARNING: Nobody’s going to like the answer.
Sadly, that would be a no.
Here’s the clincher though – while this little trick DOES in fact help a person lose weight initially, it’s not a long term solution, because the second you slip up and eat a human meal, your body rewards all your effort by putting all the weight right back on!
2. VEGETARIANS DON’T GET ENOUGH PROTEIN
How many vegetarians have had to give people the death stare when they’re told they get no protein?
You can definitely blame this ill informed opinion on this well-known myth that’s been doing the rounds.
So here’s the truth: This myth exists because vegetarian sources of protein for example: dal, are incomplete sources on their OWN, while animal sources are complete.
When eaten together with another incomplete vegetarian protein source, for example: dal with rice, the two of them together make a complete protein!
Now that's some KNOWLEDGE!
3. BROWN BREAD IS “LESS-FATTENING” THAN WHITE BREAD
The main issue with white bread is the fact that it affects our blood glucose levels negatively.
We usually try to sidestep that and skip over to the ‘healthier’ option – brown bread.
Apologies for busting anybody’s bubble, but the only thing that makes brown bread brown, is caramel colouring!
So you’re basically just still consuming white bread, only it’s wearing a different outfit.
Here’s a little tip to make it all better though: ‘Whole grain’ bread is the one to opt for. Its got a bit of an edge over the others.
4. EGG YOLK CAUSES CHOLESTEROL
Long story short, eggs are not the villain and they won’t kill you.
They come out of chickens, how mean could they possibly be!
Here are the facts:
There are two types of cholesterol – blood cholesterol and dietary cholesterol.
Blood cholesterol is what’s produced by the body itself and dietary is the one that’s obtained from eating foods that contain it.
The truth about dietary cholesterol is that it's very POORLY absorbed by the body and quickly removed.
It’s your BLOOD cholesterol levels that are the major concern and eating an egg isn’t going to affect those.
So feel free to get your breakfast on!
These are the facts guys, you heard it here first :)
