The Japanese Weight Loss Hack You've Got To Try | Culture Shock

Gear up for this one because here's a series thats about to bring you a multitude of global secrets to healthy living, fitness and nutrition.

While we’re all proud Indian’s living in the the birthplace of yoga and Ayurveda we’re not that well versed with the local trends of other countries so this is all about bringing you secrets from all over the globe and hoping you’ll find them useful. Welcome, to culture shock!

The first trend hails from Okinawa, a cluster of islands south of Japan.

Okinawa first drew a lot of interest because its got the highest rate of centenarians in the world, for anyone that doesn’t know what that is, it means a person who lives to or beyond the age of 100.

Awww! And here I can barely handle my 20’s. ANYWAY...moving on.

The secret to their long life is a custom traditionally known as ‘Hara Hachi Bu.’ Which basically means, eating until you are 80% full.

Now this method comes as a shock to almost all the rest of us because we’re used to eating like food is going to become extinct soon.

Eating until 80% full is a clever method of calorie restriction because it takes exactly 20 minutes for the stomach to send the ‘i’m full’ signal to the brain.

This prevents you from overeating, but this is something a lot of us miss out on because we’re too busy stuffing our faces already.

Now the main question is, how do we know when we’re 80% full?

Unfortunately our bodies are not quite THAT advanced yet and don’t go off ringing like an alarm when you hit that stage. So simply put, eating not until you’re full, but eating till you’re no longer hungry is the point at which you should set your fork down and smile sweetly because you haven't overeaten and hence you don’t want to throw up.

At this point I know everybody wants to know if you’ll end up feeling hungry later, and the sad truth is yes you will, just a little though. But this method of eating puts less pressure on the intestines and slows down the aging process, so it’s honestly more of a question of using a little will power for a huge advantage in the long run. Honestly, you guys need to see these people, google Okinawans and check out how some of them are cuter than we are now.

Lastly, this method of eating lowers your BMI which stops the stomach receptors from stretching and on the other hand overeating results in the constant stretching of the stomach receptors, increasing the amount of food we need to feel full.

The biggest thing to take away from this is the fact that we should listen to our bodies more.

Now while it’s important to know that WHAT the Okinawan’s eat is pretty healthy as well, things like fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and whole grains, adopting their method of smaller portions is at least a start. So if you're having a hard time eating less, maybe grab a pair of chopsticks, because trying to eat with those things will have you so frustrated you’ll have given up way before you're about to burst anyway.
